It was in December 1948 that the wife of that great American President, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and her African American Assistant, Ralph Bunche presented the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Almost 58 years later, we are happy to announce the birth of a document titled “Right of Habitation – Complementary to the JUniversal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948”

The Right of Habitation is addressed to governments and civil society organisation, wherever they are. By definition, every living being has the full right of habitation. The Right creates a whole range of entitlements, for the benefit of the living. No man or woman, boy or girl, needs to meet any juridical or legal procedure in order to claim the enjoyment of the Entitlements in the Right of Habitation. The Right of Habitation is similar to a birth mark, it is not meant to be got rid of. It remains with us for as we live. The Right of Habitation is the Right of inhabitants of a nation state.

The said Right comprises of human senses, functioning in unison and in the company of other senses. Inevitably, our senses of seeing, believing, touching, walking, suffering pain, enjoying a good laugh, feeling fearful, feeling sorrowful, empathising with others as they experience a trauma, strong emotional support for others - all of these are inextricably intertwined with our Right of Habitation.

The Right of Habitation runs to some 67 Articles

There is a gulf of difference between the Right of Habitation and Convention Rights. The former is an inherent Right. The latter is a bi-product of human experience. The Right of Habitation is not subject to metamorphosis or mutation.
